Having a self-propelled lawn mower saves you the stress of having to push it around manually. Having to use more energy pushing your lawn mower can make mowing your yard very frustrating and take longer to do – hence the invention of self-propelled lawn mowers. Like the Husqvarna self-propelled lawn mower, it does the work, with very little effort from you.

Normally your self-propelled lawn mower comes adjusted. But what happens when it isn’t to your preference? Or after using it for a while, it begins to shift out of position? All these can be easily corrected provided you know how to go about it.

There are few tips on how to adjust your Husqvarna self-propelled lawn mower and keep it in good shape. Before adjusting a self-propelled lawn mower, you should know how it works, so, you can tell quickly if it needs any adjustment.

How a Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Works

As the name implies “self-propel,” means it can actually move on its own without you needing to push it.  A self-propelled lawn mower works using a drive system, making it very similar to a rear wheel propulsion vehicle. The drive system requires that you squeeze the bail, which is a bar located on the handle of the mower. This will cause the lawn mower to move on its own without you having to push it.

After squeezing the bar, the blades begin to rotate, and this causes the mower to move forward. This is where your work comes in; you then have to walk behind it and control the direction in which it goes.

With most self-propelled lawn mowers like the Husqvarna, when you release your grip the mower shuts down; it automatically stops moving, and so do the blades.

So, what happens when you’re using the mower and it’s moving too slowly for you or moving too fast? This is when your lawn mower needs adjusting. By fixing the wheel drive control, the fuel input to the engine, or some of the power equipment you should be able to fix this issue.

How to Adjust the Drive Control

As time goes by and you continue using your Husqvarna self propelled lawn mower, it is only natural for the drive control to become loose. This would inadvertently lead to your mower becoming slow during any mowing session. However, this can be adjusted, but before that, let’s see what can cause your lawn mower to lose its drive.

  1. If the drive belt is worn, this might be why. If that is the case, you simply just have to replace it
  2. If the drive belt has disconnected from the pulley, proper installation will have your Husqvarna mower running up to speed
  3. If the drive cable is damaged or becomes loose, you need to replace it.
  4. If there are too many grass cuttings stuck in the drive wheel, this can make your mower have a loss of drive. Simply clean it out.

Over time, the problem might be from the drive cable; this is how it can be adjusted:

  • Switch off the unit, and then unplug the wire of the spark plug from the plug
  • Spin the turnbuckle located on the underside of the drive control housing. Doing so will help increase the drive speed
  • Use the mower to know if the speed you have set is okay enough for you (test drive). If it isn’t, continue re-adjusting until you are satisfied
  • If the problem still persists, you should try replacing your drive belt instead

If after all of the above, you are still unable to adjust the drive control, then you should contact an authorized service center for help.

While engaging in the mower adjustment process, it is important to take precautionary steps to avoid disasters that could cause you severe injuries.

Safety Precautions

  1. Before you work on your mower, please refer to the owner’s manual for your own safety
  2. Before starting any adjustment process, put on the right gear, including safety goggles, protective gloves, and boots
  3.  After any adjustments, slowly test run the mower
  4. Stay clear from the cutting deck during any adjustment process to avoid injuries.

How to Adjust the Cutting Height

Sometimes the grass in your yard can be higher than the rest. Once in a while, you need to cut grasses that are either taller or shorter than the set height your Husqvarna mower comes with. Since all the four wheels are being adjusted by a single lever –

  • Pull the adjuster lever close to the wheel
  • To increase the mower level, just move the lever forward to the desired position
  • To reduce the mower level, you have to move the lever to the rear

How to Adjust the Height of Your Husqvarna Mower

If the mower is too tall for you or too short, you don’t have to fret because this can be adjusted. To make the adjustment, locate the knob and carriage bolt located on one side of the lower handle and remove it. After that, hold the handle assembly and remove the carriage bolt and the knob from the opposite side.

Find your desired height and put the handle back on by putting the hole in the handle with the desired hole that is in the handle bracket. Put the bolt and knob back together and make sure everything is secured tightly. Arrange the hole on the opposite side of the handle with the same positioning hole, and then secure it with the knob and bolt.

Summary

Adjusting the settings on your Husqvarna self-propelled lawn mower isn’t a difficult task, especially if you follow through with these guidelines. Adjusting is so you can maximize the capacity of your lawn mower allowing it to serve you much better. If you find that the manufacturer’s setting aren’t right for you, then feel free to personalize them.  Just be sure you know what you are doing, and always put your safety first.
